Nice post!!! The whole sodium thing worries me. I really need to stop adding salt to my food so that the sodium/potassium balance is ok.

Hi, Dr. Dan. You're eating mostly paleo, right? I bet most paleo diets are lower in salt than the Standard American Diet.

I suspect only about 20% of the population is salt sensitive, in terms of high blood pressure anyway.

Yes mostly paleo for sure! Still paleo tends to miss out the calcium and so I think its important to keep a good sodium/potassium balance so your bones are not stripped of calcium. This is why I can turn a blind eye to letting in some dairy products every now and then.

There's so much contradictory information about calcium intake and bone health, I'm not sure what to believe any more.

Nevertheless, my current low-carb eating jag is calcium-deficient, if you look at it strictly by the numbers. So I'm supplementing with elemental calcium 500 mg/day plus vitamin D 1000 IU/day.

The ENCORE study seems to reinforce that the DASH diet (heavy emphasis on high potassium and low sodium along with calcium, magnesium, etc) does a pretty good job of reducing bp. I don't see why that wouldn't translate into reduced strokes.
