This is a seriously fantastic study. While it is true that 'any' diet that could promote an AVERAGE weight loss of 30 lb in just 12 weeks would likely generate the lipid/sugar/weight improvements you note, I think rare is the diet that actually creates those results. Of particular note is the trigyliceride number. I can't imagine it would be easy to obtain results like that without the carb drop, and is completely consistent with what a LC diet usually does. With triglyceride/HDL ratio becoming a respected marker of heart disease, it is great to see that the individuals that took this challenge went from the classic high triglyceride/HDL ratio of 4.38 ( +4 considered high) down to 2.07 (2 considered ideal).

Dr Dan, thanks for your observation on the paleo diet. It was right in front of me and I didn't see it. (Anybody interested in the paleo diet should click on Dr Dan.)

I wonder if paleolithic man had alcohol? I've read modern reports of animals becoming "drunk" on fermented fruit laying around on the ground.

Hi, Matt. I agree a low-fat/high-carb weight-loss diet would NOT drop triglycerides nearly as much.

struggling with what they mean below by "indvidually". It's excerpted out of their document. Does this mean they ate the protein seperate from the veggies/olive oil or that it's restating the earlier part of the sentence where you have a fish day and a non fish day? Any opinions? Thanks
Excerpt:
The "no fish block" included meat, fowl, eggs, shellfish and cheese. Both protein blocks were not mixed in the same day and were consumed individually during its day on the condition that at least 4 days of the week were for the "fish block".
